‘Le deuxième des 3 films réalisé par Michael Reeves, le regretté enfant prodige du cinéma britannique décédé d’une overdose à l’âge de 24 ans, The Sorcerers n’a peut-être pas l’impact viscéral du chef-d’œuvre Witchfinder General (1968), mais est quand même féroce et original. Boris Karloff y joue un vieux scientifique de Londres vivant dans la pauvreté avec sa femme et rêvant d’une percée pour sa technique d’hypnose. Cherchant un cobaye, il met les mains sur Mike, un jeune homme malheureux, (Ian Ogilvy, ayant apparu dans les 3 films de Reeves) et bien sûr, les choses dégénèrent. Londres à son meilleur, pleines de mini-jupes et de boites de nuits, que la réalisation maîtrisée de Reeves transforme en un rêve éveillé et labyrinthique de violence, ouvrant la porte à vague d’horreur post-Hammer des années 70.’ (Cinéma Blue Sunshine)

Le réalisateur incarne un cameraman fictif, Sandor Krasna, rédacteur de lettres lues tout au long du film par Florence Delay. Dans ses écrits, il va traiter successivement du temps, de la mémoire, de la fragilité humaine face aux séismes du Japon ou encore face à la famine, menace constante au Cap Vert ou en Guinée-Bissau. Le cinéaste voyage alors aux « deux pôles extrêmes de la survie » tel qu’il le dit lui-même. Il montrera non pas les difficultés pour ces sociétés à s’en sortir, mais plutôt leur façon de vivre et d’exister au-delà de ce qui peut leur coûter la vie. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, Jack Burman se rend dans les camps de concentration, les laboratoires médicaux, les églises et les catacombes à travers le monde à la recherche des morts toujours présents parmi les vivants. Avec une sensibilité et un respect irréprochables, il photographie très minutieusement des cadavres, des squelettes ou encore des membres et des têtes baignant dans le fluide nécessaire à leur conservation. The Dead [Les morts] (1999-2010) dépeint, certes, un sujet cru et tragique qui ne permet plus à notre vision de la mort de demeurer abstraite. Toutefois, l’esthétique propre à ces corps post mortem agit ici comme une invitation à prendre conscience de la sensualité du corps et à s’approcher en toute confiance de la fine marge qui relie la vie à la mort.
