Bernard Émond & Simon Galiero

Bernard Émond livre ici une stimulante réflexion sur l’importance pour le Québec de renouer avec son patrimoine culturel et spirituel. Série de trois entretiens avec Simon Galiero publiée à l’occasion de la sortie du film La donation, ‘La perte et le lien’ raconte la création de la trilogie commencée avec La neuvaine et Contre toute espérance. Bernard Émond y approfondit le sens de chacun de ces films, expliquant à la fois son respect pour l’héritage chrétien et les raisons de sa non-croyance.

Mais le livre va au-delà de la trilogie : il dévoile le parcours tout en contrastes dont émane l’ensemble de l’œuvre de Bernard Émond. Il traite de sa conception du film comme une fable, de son esthétique dépouillée inspirée de Bergman, de l’importance accordée dans son œuvre à des lieux emblématiques de l’histoire du Québec, et de son travail avec des comédiens comme Élise Guilbault, Guylaine Tremblay et Luc Picard. Enfin, Bernard Émond et Simon Galiero partagent leur point de vue sur la réalité de la société québécoise contemporaine et dénoncent la rupture de celle-ci avec son histoire, un déracinement qui la laisse à la merci du néolibéralisme et d’une culture du divertissement souvent abrutissante.

À la faveur d’une belle connivence, les deux cinéastes vont au-delà du simple échange de questions et de réponses pour élaborer ensemble une réflexion soutenue, captivante, cohérente et décapante.

Après des études en anthropologie, Bernard Émond a travaillé dans le Grand Nord canadien, à la télévision inuit. Il est arrivé au cinéma par le documentaire. Ses films et leurs comédiens ont remporté plusieurs prix au Québec et à l’étranger. Il a aussi écrit le scénario de Ce qu’il faut pour vivre, gagnant du Jutra du meilleur film en 2009. Pour sa part, La donation s’est déjà démarquée aux festivals de Locarno et de Toronto.

Simon Galiero est coéditeur de la revue électronique Hors Champ et réalise des courts métrages depuis 1998. Il a remporté en 2008 le Prix Jutra du meilleur court/moyen métrage pour Notre prison est un royaume. Il a réalisé cette année son premier long métrage, Nuages sur la ville.

Les brûlantes illustrations de Lucas Cranach pour la Bible de 1534 de Luther : le livre qui a à jamais bouleversé la chrétienté

Publiée en 1534, la Bible de Martin Luther était la première Bible allemande complète. Sa diffusion a marqué un tournant majeur dans l’histoire de la chrétienté. La traduction révolutionnaire dans le langage vernaculaire, aussi moderne que son interprétation, rendit la Bible accessible aux non-initiés et a contribué de façon décisive à l’apparition de la Réforme en Europe du Nord et à la naissance d’une nouvelle religion, le protestantisme.

Les exemplaires les plus convoités incluaient des illustrations politiquement chargées au graphisme choquant, comme celles qui présentent la Putain de Babylone coiffée de la couronne papale et chevauchant un monstre à sept têtes, ou les Quatre Cavaliers de l’Apocalypse conduits par un soldat turc.

TASCHEN publie aujourd’hui ces 117 gravures sur bois autrefois coloriées à la main dans l’atelier de Lucas Cranach. Chacune d’elles a fait l’objet d’une reproduction méticuleuse à partir d’un exemplaire original rare et somptueux conservé à la Bibliothèque Herzogin Anna Amalia de Weimar. La préface de Stephan Füssel propose un aperçu de la vie de Luther, du contexte historique et de l’importance culturelle de la Bible de Luther, ainsi que des descriptions détaillées des illustrations et de leur iconographie.

And the ideas about Hirst’s science/religion dichotomy are further explored through an intriguing interview with Sean O’Hagan that moves effortlessly from the macro to the micro, and back again, ‘‘I just can’t help thinking that science is the new religion for many people. It’s as simple and as complicated as that really.’’
